The Breed

This word describes best these folks. Well, it's not about some dogs or something. It's about a bunch of people whose professionalism is above everything. They are musicians and I just don't know what they eat and how they sleep to achieve such results. Ladies and gentlemen - The Breed!

5 years ago, I saw one great man on a live performance and I thought that I will never see him again. But the good news came on time a few months ago - Steve Vai and his band, called simply The Breed, will touring Europe this Fall. And they are planning a show in Bulgaria. I was very excited when I heard that. "My dreams will come true!", I thoungt. But it wasn't just like I thought.

November, 16th 2005. Hall #1, National Palace of Culture, Sofia.
We don't had any tickets yet(the selling was only in Sofia; strange but true) but we arrived on time, about half an hour before the show. There was a small booth with Steve Vai's fan stuff(t-shirts, DVDs, CDs) close to the main entrance. I walked up to the booth and what was the surprise - Vai t-shirts at a price of 50 leva(about 30 USD) and the amazing "Live At The Astoria in London" DVD at the price of 40 leva(about 23 USD). I was a little shock for me. See, I know that the prices of some thing here, in Bulgaria, and all over the world are different. I know that. But, hey - in the US the "Live At The Astoria in London" DVD costs only 16.98 USD(about 28.5 leva; in Amazon UK that DVD costs about 22 leva w/o shipping). What I want is not to buy this things cheaper. I just want to buy them at their real price. So, I couldn't buy fan's stuff - maybe next time(after the show, Mr. Vai promised to came back here soon, yeah!). Whatever...

Eric Sardinas made fantastic warm-up to the audience. His music is a little bit strange. Some people said that he plays slide rock(because of the bottleneck he uses), some said he plays R'N'R. I think it can be called cowboys rnr or country rock. It doesn't matter how will you name it - his playing is just awesome!

And then - lights out. On the stage came out one by one(not in this order but...):

  • Steve Vai - Guitar & Vocals
  • Billy Sheehan - Bass & Vocals
  • Tony MacAlpine - Guitar & Keyboards
  • Jeremy Colson - Drums
  • Dave Weiner - Rhythm Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Sitar

And then, after 3+ hours show, they just cut our heads(to the ankles)!

A friend of mine said it very shortly after the show: "If someone asks you how it was, you can tell him one thing: I can't tell you - you must see it with your own eyes!"

Steve Vai and his band were very impressed from the audience. I'm sure that before the show he didn't knew that he will play 3 hours and more.
We all love Steve!
We all "build that church"!
